For a few years now, there has been a squirrel living in the attic space above my garage, which posed no harm, as there is nothing up there. Well, Now it seemed to have worked its way into the attic above our living space, which freeks out the wife, and worries me about eating through wires and such.

5 Gal bucket filled with antifreeze. You can get crafty and build a little trap so that when the squirel steps on it he falls into the bucket.

A co-worker told me about this. I have not tried it but a couple of others have and endorse it.
Put a little radio in the attic with nothing playing but static. Just the buzzy static. 24 hours a day and the squirrels will vacate. It doesn't have to be loud but I guess they really hate it. Works with mice and rats, too.
I lost a much loved dog to antifreeze poisoning and it is the most horrifying way for an animal to die. Never use antifreeze. Never.

Get 2 boxes of D-Conn at a L&G Center or Hardware. It usually only takes 1 box for a rat but squirrels are bigger so it takes more. This works because squirrels are just rats with fuzzy tails. If you don't want it to suffer put a rat trap with peanut butter.

shoot the rat, or get a trap (live catch) put a pecan in it or some rainwater. once caught, it will make so much noise in cage that you will know when you have it. release it a minimum of 10 miles away. I had family of 4 in my attic, noisemakers wouldn't work, mothballs did nothing. 38 caliber w/ birdshot did the trick
