Sometimes DVD software preadjusts the control panel settings

You could have 2 problems:
1. you need to go into the control panel and adjust the sound or uncheck mute

Easy - on XP
Start -> Settings -> Control panel Click
Sounds Speech and Audio devices Click
Sound and Audio Devices Click
Is mute check if so uncheck and click apply
While in this dialog box Is device volume low or high
move toggle to right to High
If mute was checked this was your problem if not

2. If not, digital sound driver must not be installed properly

Start -> Settings -> Control panel Click
Sounds Speech and Audio devices Click
Sound and Audio Devices Click
Click hardware
There is a DVD driver for sound, Is there another drive that says "Sound max Digital Integrated Audio" or "<> Digital <> Audio" if not the sound driver is not installed properly and you need to call the support for your laptop

If your laptop is new, less than 14 days you can take it to the store to fix
If less than 1 year but grater than 14 days you must mail to the manufacturer or talk to them on the phone

The driver can be found on manufacturers site at http://www.Dell.com

You might want to get a new MacBook or a MacBook Pro from Apple.
