CD's or DVD's are the best I think. DVD's will hold more data then a CD.

I prefer the USB stick because it can hold as at least 1GB+, depending on what you buy. A lot of storage space is available. Also, unlike the floppy, information doesn't somehow get corrupted. You can also use a CD to back up the information saved from the USB and store the CD somewhere else other then your place. I keep a backup file on my desk top and make sure I always copy to my USB stick, which I carry with me, if I make any changes, then to the CD. This should actually be done on a every so often basis just in case your system crash, etc. Hope this helps.

Different types of devices have different applications.
CD\DVDs are go for backup and archives. They IMO are cost effective since you only spend about 20¢ to 50¢ per Gb.

USB flash drives respond very much like a hard drive. The down side is they are rather expensive compared to a hard drive. About $50 per Gb.

Tape while an excellent backup medium, is slow and expensive compared to the other types. Drives can still run in the hundreds of dollars.

External hard drives, either USB, Firewire, NAS (Ethernet), or SCSI, and the most cost efficient and (IMO) practical.

External drive can range from $50 for a 18Gb* USB drive to $150 for a 320Gb** USB drive. You will need to hard a computer with USB 2.0 to take full advantage of the drives potentical, but will work with the older USB 1.0 & 1.1 standards.

Floppy's do not have a very long shelf life and are easily damaged. Flash drive is good for moving files from one computer to another not for permanent even though they are solid state(no moving parts) they are hardy but quite expensive for one of any great capacity. I use CD's to store my files long term, when kept in protective coverings or cases they have a very long shelf life. DVD's however do not have a very long shelf life, yes they store more, lot's more, but they are affected by heat and moisture and it has been proven that certain brands have very limited shelf lives, it is hard to know which brands though and the only way to tell is once the disc has expired. So I vote CD's for great and reliable when treated responsibly.

I have an external disk drive that's really handy. A flash is used for photos mainly. I don't have a CD or DVD. People don't really use floppies any more. I used to have a zip disk drive that went belly-up.

External hard disks as they are reliable and can contain a lot of data.

Currently I am using one 200GB IDE hard disk and one 40GB laptop hard disk both with USB casing.
