Okay. There was a break into you room. But it's not one of those serious ones in which you need to call the police. But someone DID raid and rummage your room, and being the person you are, you're offended. The stolen item (left on the kitchen table when supposedly done with) was a valuable book to you that you HATE to replace or see stained and damaged. You ask all possible suspects in which all deny. (Someone is obviously lying or one of the suspect's friends-who were over that day-raided and took the book themselves.) A "Keep Out" sign is issued and all, but since not many people really pay attention to signs, how can you prevent future break-ins without really using a camera? (If you suggest fingerprinting, how do you do it without the supplies or kit or whatever?) Please suggest more the fingerprinting though.

Okay, let's say I don't have any access to the high-tech equipment or stuff. (Not to mention the budget.) And just to let you know, I'm not even 18 yet so I'm still pretty much living with my family. Besides, our house is secure to those other burglars. It's just when your mom or sister starts to take stuff without permission it gets annoying. So I don't need to report anyone to police because it's not that serious. I can't use cameras because there is really no place I can set them and I find that a waste of batteries and tape. We can't install locks because this isn't our permanent residence. I'm talking about an easy and performable way like fingerprints. They can be washed and removed easily. That's the type of method I'm talking about.

And no, it wasn't a Harry Potter book. : )

Put a motion sensor on your door, when the door opens an alarm goes off.

Sure to startle the bejesus out of whoever opens the door.

They are cheap and only takes minutes to install.

When i went to college, I had an old lockable steamer trunk that I kept all of my valuables in. Bought it for $2 and got my monies worth. Stil have it but now it is used to hide christmas presents from curious eyes.

Must have been a Harry Potter Book.

Install a lock and a cheap motion alarm on your door.

And don't leave something as vauable as your Harry Potter books in the Kitchen, lock them in your room.

That's a bad one. Speak to all you house mates and whatever, and tell them that it's not good. If it happens again you would seriously consider reporting it to the police. Also....lock your stuff up.
But the first step is to let them know you are not happy with it.

what's wrong with using cameras? they're cheap & resourceful tools

how about a better lock on the door or keeping a hidden &/or locked cabinet or suitcase or something where your valuables go

call the cops, first and report a break in. To not have it happen again install a good alarm system.
