The Mayan calender ends abruptly on 2012. Many feel this
when the shift of the Earth's axis will take place.

This question could be answered in a hundred ways. Entire books are written on this subject.
There are many "Mayan calendars"--not just one.
The one everyone is talking about right now, the one that supposedly "ends" in 2012 is called the Long Count and it's simply a count of days, not unlike an odometer, except it's in base 20 instead of 10 (one section is base 18).
On 12-21-2012, the supposed "end date", the calendar's wheels will read 13.00.00.00.00. It's going from the 12th baktun to the 13th, not unlike our calendar going from 1999 to 2000, except that a Baktun is 396 years long.
To compound the whole "end of the world" thing, on that same date there is a major astronomical alignment between the sun and the milky way at dawn, which to the Maya signified the birth of a new sun...ie, a new world age. NOT the end of the old one.

The Mayan ca lander is a cyclical view of time. The Mayans used astronomical events and features to produce a calendar that not only kept track of dates, but actually made predictions. These predictions were based on historical accounts of the same point in a previous era of time. Four eras were used to construct a calendar that is alarmingly supposed to end its fourth cycle in December 2012.

I agree with Josh L he is absolutely correct. If you separate the rings in the calendar and sort of like the inside of a watch, and apply them to astronomy it make a perfect account past, present and future of the allignment of the stars. Apparently in Dec 2012 a comet will collide with earth and cause a cataclysmic event. This is considered by many the worlds first computer and most accurate it will tell you the allignment of the stars tomorrow, whatever.
2 years from now and has not been wrong yet. This is what worries many scientists. Thank you for asking.

End of 4th cycle should not alarm as it is a shift, not a destruction.
