There is a specific answer for this and the year is 1977 , the man ILYA PRIGOGINE
The man who gave us the theory of dissipative structures in nonequilibrium thermodynamics.

Heat Death Of The Universe: A Scientific Theory as to what might happen to the planet Earth... and everything else.

The 'heat-death' of the universe is when the universe has reached a state of maximum entropy. This happens when all available energy (such as from a hot source) has moved to places of less energy (such as a colder source). Once this has happened, no more work can be extracted from the universe. Since heat ceases to flow, no more work can be acquired from heat transfer. This same kind of equilibrium state will also happen with all other forms of energy (mechanical, electrical, etc.). Since no more work can be extracted from the universe at that point, it is effectively dead, especially for the purposes of humankind.

We too are expanding. Our content is less elastic. Our character is in a flux. You have no fixed ideals. Your value system is ever changing. You are more tempermanetal, swayed by the present rather than the past and the future. You are wavering like a boat in a swirling river rather than an upright tree. All these are the signs that the universe within you is expanding. Every being is a microcosm of the macrocosm, that is the universe.

The universe is expanding into the infinite dark matter space with which the universe is surrounded.

The surface of the earth is finite, but without edge. It is a similar condition to space, but space adds a dimension. Space is finite, yet limitless.

If the earth were a balloon being inflated, the surface of the earth would stretch and expand, but not necesarily "into" anything. It is similar for the the universe.

the universe is expanding not the earth..
that probably implies that the earth is going far from other bodies as universe expands...... and since ou whole solar system itself is very much a small part of our galaxy (which is furthermore small as to the universe) the process is not affecting us observably..

the universe is expanding into nothing. Same way with the big bang theory. (I think the scientists that thought of that were on something. Hell, the way I figure it, we'll find out eventually...)

Space is infinite. It's matter that's expanding out into space.
