Hi! They are called that in Australia, too. It's because they are a substitute for the real thing, the breast.

Probably for the same reason that a manequin is called a dummy. It takes the place of the real thing.

It's "dummy" for short, the full term is "dummy teat", you sometimes hear older people say it but usually it sounds like "dummy tit".
