Those were the days, before television, that we used to listen to the radio.
When I tell people about that over here, they look at me as if I stepped out of a time machine.
I was 12 the first time I saw TV, and 14 before my toppie bought a black and white (yes) TV.
In those days we watched 'The Brady Bunch', '240 Robert', 'Rich Man Poor Man' (still the greatest mini-series ever made) and South African shows like 'The Villagers' (huge hit) and 'Willem'.

On the radio we listened to stuff like 'The Avengers', 'The Mind of Tracy Dark', 'Venture' or, if you were bunking school, stuff like 'So Maak Mens', 'Die Wildtemmer' and all the other assorted Afrikaans soap operas.

Should I bring politics into this?...mmm...nah...why f**k this up.

jack daniels - you were actually on base on the weekends during your National Service?
Once basics were over and I was posted to KD Skool at what was Voortrekkerhoogte, I was out every weekend, either on pass or on AWOL - only got caught once, the first time I did it - and yes - I bullsh***ed my way out of it.

Queen B - 'Wolwedans In Die Skemer' was written by a friend of mine, Leon Van Nierop. Haven't seen him in years.
He also had a program on Sundays called 'Film Scrapbook' ('Rolprent Plakboek') on Radio Highveld, featuring an hour of movie music.
I used to write to him, as I've always been a movie soundtrack listener, and he'd sometimes read my letters on the air.
finally, he invited me to appear on the show one night, and that's how we became friends.

Hi Brad.
My mother and Omi (grandmother) is forever on about Springbok Radio. That's how they and their family learned to speak Afrikaans when they came over.
Now they have Radio Sonder Grense, and neither like it. They say it's not the same.

You are not the only one. Sunday afternoon Esma Everard (sorry not sure on the spelling of her name) for forces favorites. Mark Saxon and Sergay - no place to hide. The wonderful afrikaans serial stories on weekday afternoons. My gran and I used to listen together while she sat sewing on her machine. The creaking door (is opening). Squad cars on a Friday evening and of course the Top Twenty singles later finishing at midnight. Great to be up late enough to hear that. Soe Maak Mense! Esma and who? late afternoon during the week. Three wise men. Those short stories that Brian O'Shaunasy used to do, was that in the morning?

Then when we saw all these guys appearing on TV when it first arrived - now that was wonderful.

This is dreadful you have made me so nostalgic. TV is not like this was.

Sorry that was way before my time. But my Toppie (my Pappa)remembers the spook stories they used to air when he was a kid.

Jinne even de Armie was oor voor ek st5 geslaan het. Wys julle eks maar nat agterrie ore soos my ma altyd se. Demmit waas die leestekens?

We still use my Oumas TV. A real tank of a thing, my Toppie says when TV's came out in Souf Africa ,my Ouma decided to buy it. She kept it in a cabinet which could lock so my Toppie en sy tjommies couldn't watch when they were supposed to be studying.
