They both have their strong points. I'd say that Street Fighter is better just because the gameplay is so much more deep and balanced that the Mortal Kombat games. It's alot harder to be a cheap fighter in the Street Fighter universe. Plus the A.I. in the Street Fighter games isn't nearly as wonky as the Mortal Kombat games. Another fault in the MK games would have to be the end bosses. They have to be some of the cheapest and unfair end bosses in any fighting game.
That said, I always thought that MK had a much better sense of style and much more developed storyline than the SF games. Making a Mortal Kombat movie made sense because the characters all had a well developed background, unlike the Street Fighter games. Plus, MK always had a wicked sense of humor and let's face it, the fatalites are fun.
Overall, Street Fighter is the better game in my opinion, but Mortal Kombat is extremely satisfying as well.

Okay streetfighter hands down because they always knew where they stood in the market and never tried to be anything different. Mortal combat keep Evolving and getting more retarded with each new incarnation. Oh what....Johnny Cage has a sword now? Cool.....Oh what? Mortal Kombat is 3d now? cool.....NOT.
Streetfighter has stayed more true to the original game. Plus one of the main creators of Mortal Kombat left to form his own company. This should give you a pretty good idea what that company values.

Streetfighter. Mortal Combat wasn't as fun after MK2.

I always preferred Streetfighter. Despite the comparatively more realistic graphics of Mortal, Streetfghter was always a much smoother game to play.

mega drive: Street figher champion edition
snes: Streetfighter 2 Turbo edition
psx: Street fighter ex plus alpha
however, mortal kombat 1 and 2 are quite cool, 3 and onwards are crap.
Street fighter is the original and the best.

The depth of SF cannot be compared to the shallow gameplay of MK. Don't get me wrong- I'm a gr8 fan of both! But check this out out: in MK1, you could kill any opponent if you kicked him into a corner and kept juggling him with a flurry of light jabs. Just what type of cr#p is that?
SF is a true gamer's game! It started at the top (I still play SF2 Turbo, imagine) and went up, Up, UP!!! graphics: MK. depth and replay value: SF. sound: Debatable. MK is cool, but there has to be something silly about memorising loads of dumb Fatalities, Friendships, Babalities (see how silly?) and whatnot. The MK dudes shamelessly churn out a platoon of characters from a few basic templates: eg Sub-Zero Scorpion Reptile Ermac Rain, Mileena Kitana.
SF gives you what you want in a beat-em-up. Everything. By the shipload. Now the small print: This message is not sponsored by Capcom, nor is it in any way calculated to smear the already cr*ppy image of Acclaim

am gonna say Mortal Kombat on this one, because although i always played the original Street Fighter( yes thats right, the one with just Ryu and Ken) it got a bit boring after a while. then came street fighter 2, far better than the first one with improved graphics, but one thing lacked i wanted MORE!!! i didn't just want to knock some guy out after a fight i wanted to rip his fookin head off. and then the master of all games came along and saved us all in the form of Mortal Kombat, with it's sweet fight engine and ok graphics, i was surprised when i first done Sub-Zero's Finisher, i'd beat the **** of johnny cage and then proceeded to rip his spine out. NICE ONE!!!!!!! (sorry about the answer, it's a bit long, but this is my view)
