I've heard that if you place a house brick into you toilet cistern it will save water. If I do the same with my car petrol tank, will it save petrol?

No! No! No! Please don't do it. Not at all the same concept. You'll likely end up with dirt in the fuel line and more trouble than I want to think about.
You were just kidding, right?

lol no. the brick thing is to take up space in the reservoir in your toilet, so that it fills with less water until it gets to the point that it automatically shuts off. it then is using less water per flush. this is kind of a bad idea since many times this will force you to flush twice because it didn't work the first time, but some people do it religiously. a brick in your petrol tank would just make your tank hold less
