For those who use one...If you would, could I hear about how you came to have it? Did you make it, buy it, find it, was it given as a gift?

The ceremonial dagger I'm currently using is sort of a "placeholder"--and I knew it was from the time I got it. Haven't stumbled across the right one yet...Just wondering about the stories of others.

TC--check out the works of Frater UD, Carroll, Regardie, and Crowley, among others. Yes, a pointed finger can indeed work as well; however, I'm looking at the power of symbolism here, which is considered of the utmost importance by occultists.

I went to the army navy surplus booth at the local flea market & paid my 5 bucks. I removed the ugly cheap canvas sheath, made one out of leather decorated with a terminated quartz & moonstone wrapped in silver wire, and have been using it ever since. I have owned several decorative & very beautiful daggers one of which was the stargate ra dagger which was given to be as a birthday gift, another is a silver handled silver sheathed dagger with a relief of a stag on it. But they didn't "feel right" when I tried to attune them to ritual work, so I stick with my original. Been about 21 years now...

As with pretty much all the tools of the Craft I have, I have found them or they have found me. Some were bought (as in the case of my athame that I bought long before I was even Wiccan) Some were made (as in the case of my wand that I went out and asked the trees to lead me to) and some are a little bit of both (as in the case of my lantern and bowl, which I bought but then painted and decorated).

There are two thoughts on ritual tools, you can either set out to find one and make it a kind of quest, or you can keep the need in the back of your mind and go about your business and let it find you. I think when the time is right you and your tool will find each other and you will know it when you see it.

I simply went to an occult store. I was there buying incense and other things and I saw the athame. I had to have it. I never actively looked for any tools in spellcraft. I always happen upon them or make them when I find what I would need during a hike in the woods.

mine was bought on the coincidence. my girlfriend of the time and i were starting from scratch, we released the intention that we needed athames and a 3 days later at a pawn shop there were 2 richly ornate blades that sat together. one had beautiful pictures of women all over the porcelin sheath. both were perfect athames i could feel the energy of the potential. mine looked like a gladius from the roman era but it had celtic knotwork all over it and its sheath. both function wonderfully now (i had just enough money on hand at the time to purchase both.) hope this helps

The athame I have was a gift from my then-boyfriend (now husband). He gave it to me when I commented on it when looking at it several years ago. The fact that he supports my beliefs even though he doesn't share my path (he's agnostic) means a lot to me.

I use my folding pocket knife. It does the trick. I used to dream of saving up and buying a double sided, black handled anthame for ceremonial use only, but I don't think I'll be able to afford it. I get most of my stuff from AzureGreen distributing and their most recent catalog has folding anthames in it. So, I no longer feel bad about using my pocket knife.

Athame, athamé or arthame is what some practitioners of ritual magic call their ceremonial knives. In some traditions, the athame is a knife with a double edged blade and short (often black) handle; other traditions require that the blade be dull, curved, wavy, or a variety of other specifications.

What tossers you all are. Do you really think having some piece of tat from a new age shop will increase your power? They are mass produced in third world countries using sweated labour. Use your pointing finger. it will do as well if you know what you are doing, if you don't then no equipment will help you.
