Peer pressure in the military started me to smoking many years ago. I have COPD today because of it (that's what they tell me any how), and I am 100% disabled because of it.
I still smoke today for one reason. I have an unusual metabolism where as I gain over 50 pounds when I quit smoking. Normal gain is suppose to be 7 to 12 pounds. I can't remember how many times I have quit (over 10) and when I gain the extra weight I can barely walk and tire very easily. By smoking I can control my weight and thus be able to walk some what more comfortable and for longer periods of time. When I was 19 I had a doctor tell me I wouldn't live to be 21 if I didn't quit. That doctor died about a year later. When I was about 26 I had another doctor tell me the same thing and said I wouldn't live to see 30 if I didn't quit. He also died acouple of years later. Kind of odd when I tell any new doctor about that as they don't press their luck I guess and never try to discuss quiting smoking with me any more. Today I'm 71 and I'm still smoking and still walking. Do you have any comments?

The reason why I started is stupid - I wanted to look older but how ridiculous does a 14 year old girl look smoking. I have given up as of Monday after smoking for almost twenty years. I am very pleased with myself.

yes i smoke and I lit my first one about age 11 also. I didn't get permission to do it until I was 16. Now I am 29. I think I did it because my entire family did it, and figured it was ok. Now I smoke because I am addicted to it. Nicotine is a relaxing legal drug. Its enjoyable to be able to light up and chill out. peace to the non-smokers.

Hmmm... I cannot remember why I started, It probably was a peer pressure thing, although I really cannot remember anybody telling me "you should smoke, it's cool", I guess I just felt it was cool.
What a clever thing to do, now I'm stuck with the nasty habit. I'm working on it though, smoking less and less. I'll eventually quit, when I find the courage.

I smoke cuz I like to smoke. It calms nerves, gives me something to do if I'm bored and I just like it. I started when I was about 15 cuz everyone I hung out with smoked so I did it too.

Because I was a chubby 13 year old and all my female friends smoked so we wouldn't eat. Worked too....Now I just can't eat or stop smoking.

my first time smoking a cig was when I was about twelve, I did it just because I did....it was something to do, I think I was being like my mom, who smoked at the time.
and now I smoke because my body craves it, I feel relaxed when I smoke..

because of the social aspect of it. LIke having a cup of coffee, or standing aroind a water cooler at work, you have a cigarette. I bet every girl I have ever made out with, it started by,"do you want a cigarette"
It also gives you something to do,my mom calls it her friend, when she is by herself

I dont, but im guessin the lighting of your first ciggarette comes from peer pressure, and then you start to get addicted to the feelin it gives you, and then before you know it, you´re a smoker.
