Does anyone besides me have a problem with students trying to get someone to do their homework for them? Do they not understand that what they are doing is not only cheating but also lazy? Do they not know that they can use that same effort to use a search engine and find the material for themselves?
Of course, I suppose all they will do is a quick "copy and paste" and call it their own work.
Lord help the next generation if this is any indication of the work ethic facing them.

I TOTALLY agree. Just the other day, someone posted a question asking where Joan of Arc was born. The person went to all the trouble to ask this question, and presumably wait around for an answer, when all she had to do was type the name into a search engine and have it in five seconds.

I asked her why she didn't just do that, and of course, received no reply.

Occasionally I will offer assistance on homework, if the question is posted in the "Homework Help" section, and the person has done the work but needs something explained. But you're right, some people are just lazy -- and more -- have you noticed how nasty and demanding these people can be. "I want "X", not your opinions -- and I need it NOW."

And then, they never bother to pick a best answer -- just take someone else's work and not even bother to say "thanks."

What will these people be like in a few years? (sigh).

Yes I do. I worked for AOL Homework Center for 10 years. There is a line between helping and doing it for the student. But this is the general attitude of many students today. They put more effort into finding a way to get someone else to do their work than they do learning the material. As a librarian, I try to give the help I would in a library which is point out sources.

As a computer teacher as well as a librarian, many of our students are not being taught research skills on how to find information. Many don't know how to do an advanced search using multiple search terms.

Perhaps this is another reason we are outsourcing so many technical jobs and hiring foreign doctors. Our kids don't know what they should.

What I do with those that are definitely homework, I either do not answer them, or if I do answer them, I suggest books that they can read to find the information out. It is rather stupid to ask questions of a peer group and expect to get good answers. When reading the answers to homework questions, I see so many errors that it is pathetic.

Students should know that their instructors have the capacity to check on whether or not their term papers and their questions indicate that they did not write them and if they suspect that, they know the places to go to find out where that answer or term paper came from.

Teachers, though not all that brilliant, do have the capacity to notice if the work that a student turns in is not in their writing style, or was so above their heads, they are unable to come up with the answers or papers on their own.

Why cant these people do their own homework.
