In krishnajanma story, Kansa made Devki and Vasudev prisoners after hearing the aakashvani that their 8th son will kill him. If he had imprisoned Devki and Vasudev in two cells, not a single child would have been born.

When Kamsa heard the aakashvani, His sister Devki had just married. But still Kamsa was so atheistic that he immediately took out the sword to kill Devki. Vasudeva some how with nice words convinced Kamsa that he has no fear from Devaki and regarding the 8th son, Vasudeva will himself deliver that child to Kamsa. Vasudeva was so much reputed for keeping his words that Kamsa felt confident and spared the life of Devki. He even allowed them to go.
But later on Kamsa became doubtful that the child may not be strictly 8th child Delivered. Even miscarriage is considered a birth. So he imprisoned her Sister and Vasudev.

In Vedic Culture, Death is considered as the surest thing to happen. So Kamsa knew that even if he kept them away Krishna would be born because God does not necessary needs Union of man and women to appear in this world. Lord Nrisingha Dev appeared directly from Pillar.
Hence knowing the futility of his attempt, he rather took it as a challenge, to allow the children to be born and then kill them after their birth. Ksatriya regards their fame as more important than even their live. Though Kamsa was so intelligent that he had already understood that his attempts where futile, his ego had so much overtaken him that he did not consider that taking shelter of God, would make God forgive any one.
That’s why it is said "Pride comes before Fall"

This is what is called 'digging one's own grave'. May be he made a mistake of mathematics. Either he miscalculated the number of sons the couple had or he might have thought that there would not be an eighth son born to them under duress. Because science says the possibility of pregnancy would be delayed if one of the couple lives under 'stress'. But Krishnajanma story defied all the odds and Krishna was born. The answer to your question can be found in today's modern day Bharat. The government has been doing one hundred ways to contain the population explosion but still India has 102 crore people in its pride and ranking just next to China. The moral of the story is 'the birth of a baby is pre destined in India'.

Good question . LOL.

Well it is said that Devaki was her favorite cousin and he did not wanted to hurt her much. Otherwise, why not kill the mother then and there. Why to bother keeping them in cell, alive, in the first place.

At first he just wanted to kill only the 8th son. and was OK with others after all.

May be he was over confident and did not took the threat that seriously and thought he can handle it that way.

I wonder if Kansa was himself thinking about these things when he died.

He wanted to have the satisfaction of killing his enemy with his own hands. Furtehr, he was very sure that with so much security, the child can not escape from him. His arrogance led to his being overconfident, and he was destined to die like this.
