Actually there is only one religion already, but there are a myriad of expressions of it. The one religion is service. Everyone is serving someone or something. In Sanskrit this is called dharma. It is the dharma or constitutional nature of the living being to serve. Just as water is wet, sugar is sweet, and fire is hot, the intrinsic nature of the living being is to serve. The question is what or whom to serve. In material consciousness, the living being serves his senses through eating, sleeping, sex and defense and also serves his extended bodily attachments of family, friends, nation, race, etc. These objects of service are temporary and therefore there is no fulfillment in this service. The unification of all living beings can be found when we recognize that our service should be directed to the Supreme. It doesn't matter if the Supreme is called Allah, Jehovah, Yahweh, Krsna or Visnu. As long as one is serving the Supreme Lord unity on the spiritual platform will be there. There is no possibility of unity on the material platform, in material consciousness, due to the unlimited differences in the external coverings, the body and mind. The platform for unity is spiritual because all living beings are ultimately spiritual, part of the eternal, spiritual energy of the Supreme Lord. So therefore, in order for there to be real unity and oneness in human society and among all living beings, we must transcend material consciousness and come to the realization of our eternal, spiritual nature.

The Bhagavad-gita has a wealth of information on how to do that. Check it out at the link below.

The purpose of religion would be defeated if we prescribe just one for the whole world.....
Problem starts with Language and its translations.... then the prescriptions as per climate , surroundings, terrain, practices, food habits(dependent on natural vegetation available), and even the prayer timings, periodicity etc...
Even within a religion, there is an urgent need to update and upgrade the pratices which have become obsolete due to technological advancements !

Peoples religion is a big part of why and how people are different. it affects what people eat, do, wear, say, ect.
Different religions are almost necessary - they make a person who they are. Religions are also beliefs, people are too stubborn about THEIR religion to consider others.
I myself am a Christian, that's what I believe and have been brought up to believe. I can't blame a Hindu for being Hindu because that's what he has been brought up to believe. That's why being open minded is so important. No matter what people say about other religions, the true basis of them all is to be a good person. That eventually changes when people twist everything around.
I think people have a natural instinct to do good, we're born innocent, but we all grow up in different enviroments.

Whose would be the one religion?

Not only that, religion grows out of culture and is reflective of the societal values of the time (e.g., look at how Christianity has changed--they no longer burn witches or heretics as they once did). Because the earth is populated by diverse cultures, diverse religions will remain. Better to employ the values espoused by the religions--most religions have those in common, e.g., love each other, be kind to your neighbors, etc.

Matter of fact is that there are two types of religions in world. The first type is that originated in Mesopotamia; Jewish, Christian, and Muslim religions. And the second group is originated in Asia. Those two types of religions actually have the same rules and commandments in basic level. Understanding and utilizing those religions are up to cultures. Therefore, I can say that everyone is believed in same basic religion, however differ in cultural level. As long as there are cultural and social differences it is going to be really hard to show that everyone is believed in same religion.

The same reason we don't all like the same colours or foods or TV shows. Different tastes, opinions, cultures, beliefs. If it's any consolation though, most religions have the same core beliefs: there is a Creator or ultimate Good (whatever you choose to call Him ie. God, Allah, etc) and you live your life the best you can, being kind to others. Can't really go wrong there...

One of the solutions to the world peace.
I would suggest not the religion but a "human code of conduct" suggested strongly recommended by the UN for each country to make it possible for each 4th grader to know and follow in his life time.

This could evolve and one day become the one "religion" you are suggesting without actually changing anything in the religions we follow now.

I am very hopeful of this project.

Truly speaking, there is only one power, named as bhagwan, god, allah etc... It would all depend upon the perception of different people of the ultimate that is described so very vividly in various places of the world, different cultures and thoughts. The TRUTH does not change but can not be defined in the limitation of the words too. For that would mean define the unlimited in limited terms. So is religion. :)

Religion is the language of spiritual knowledge! there is no necessity of one religion as long as every one believes in the LORD or GOD. The people who play with religion for their own ulterior motives by distorting, interpreting are the culprit who need to be dealt with. People use different language for communication, variety of food for feeding hunger and drinks for quenching thirst. The objective is what important not the medium. It is such people who mis use them are responsible for all the rut!

The laws of physics and mathematics in the different countries of the world
are identical, but religions - different. Why?
Because the religion is not proved by the laws of physics and mathematics.
And unless it is possible?
In my book and on a site I approve that it is possible.

Many of physics consider, that: " the Physics is first of all Vacuum. "
P. Dirac wrote:
" Тhe problem of the exact description of vacuum, in my opinion,
is the basic problem worth now before physics.
Really, if you can’t correctly describe vacuum,
how it is possible expect for the correct description something more complex? ".
It is completely correct.
