How the pearl gets created in the shell/oysters in sea ?

a piece of sand gets stuck in there and the oyster tries to get rid of the irritation by making a pearl out of it..candy's answer is perfect

Pearls are created when the clam gets a grain of sand in it's body (mouth). The body then starts excreting chemicals to rid it's self of the sand grain. When this process starts it is a type of calcifying in which over time different layers are created over the grain of sand , which after it hardens it becomes a pearl.
