i've always heard that rock was "3 chords and the truth" and i was getting frustrated with this heavy metal stuff. a band can't have respect anymore unless they can whip out a 2 minute solo. rock is about rebellion. thats why i listen to punk. but my guitar playing proficieny has gotten to the point where i can bash out power chords, and i realized all the bands i had idolized were doing exactly what i was doing. but i don't want to go back to learning the lamo guitar. i want to make punk rock sound beyond 3 heavily distorted power chords. what do you think?

I see what your saying dude....but.....punk is already what it is in it's music structure, or should I say pigeon holed into it's music structure...........if you go changing your approach i.e. adding chords or neat little fills, you changed the music structure which may be a whole lot like another music structure.....i.e. heavy rock or blues or whatever...and then you and your music will be pigeoned holed into that genre....make sense

The only way to pull off what your talking about is to invent a new musical genre...........

My advice? Don't concentrate on fitting into any one genre. Take what you like from punk, take what you like from metal, take what you like from... I dunno... grunge... And throw it all together. If you don't wanna just use "3 heavily distorted power chords", then don't. Sorry I can't give anything more specific...
