Don't buy a Fender you will be disappointed. There are many well made beginner guitars on the market and Fender isn't one of them. Take a look at ESP. Their LTD series guitars blow away Fender. You could get an Eclipse model for around $600 and thats less then the Japanese made Fenders. Try out the PRS LE models. Jackson makes great guitars in the lower price range if you are looking for a guitar to play Metal. Ibenez Jem's and AX series are also great starter guitars, although the Jem is even played by Pro's and they cost anywhere from $300 to $800. The Epiphone series of guitars are a decent quality instrument, some of the Elitist series guitar are superb. Fender is a one trick pony, I stay away from them like to plague, necks to thick feels slow. As well most people don't know this but you can modify a Humbucking pickup to a single coil pickup to make any guitar sound like a Fender. I can get my Les Paul to sound like a Fender but you can't turn a single coil into a humbucker. Go and pick up the Guitar Buyers Guide at your local magazine store and look and see what you like, then find it at you local music stores. The mag tells you the price and features of the new guitars on the market. Remember that if you plan on staying with playing guitar pay for a higher quality guitar, the highest you can, you will not regret it later on as you will not have to upgrade that guitar, you will just add to your collection.

On the assumption that you can play and this is not just a whim I would suggest that you buy the most expensive one you can afford. Cheap electric guitars aren't worth it. They don't always play well and the sound is limited. Whatever you buy don't fall in the trap that many do in music shops and try one through a load of distortion. Even a cheese cutter can play through that. No, play one 'clean' and the better the sound, the better the guitar. You can always fuzz it up later.

Personally I would recommend a Fender. The Stratocaster is probably the most famous guitar in the world but there are several models and you need to be careful. If you want a good clean sound try an American Series 'A' or a reissue, 1957 or 1963. Those may be expensive so you could try a MIJ (Made in Japan) model or, even cheaper, a Squier (Made in Mexico).

Other good makes include Gibson and Gretsch and these have several models again that are available.

My collection includes a 1968 Fender Telecaster
A 1957 Re-issue Fender Stratocaster
An American A Series Fender Stratocaster
A Gretsch Duo-Jet

I did have a Gibson ES 335 but found it too bulky for stage work.

If you're just learning to play. Buy a good brand like "Fender".
If you buy one that's to cheap, it'll be hard to play and hurt your fingers. You may get discouraged and give it up. Besides that later on you won't need to upgrade to a better guitar. Therefore saves you money in the long run.

walk into a guitar store and pick up everyone until one feels right. don't look at brand names. i find it better to get a better guitar made by a lesser known company than the cheapest guitar available from a big well company, ie, squiers and epis.

Wow- exciting! Well, depends on how much you wanna spend.

A basic Fender Strat or a Squire might be a good, affordable one.

But if the $ky$ the limit, hell, I'd get a Gibson Les Paul!

fender stratocaster. cheap, sturdy, loud, easy, durable. great guitar. its a little heavy, consindering it was ment to be played standing up, but its ok. fretting is VERY easy, easier than any acoustic guitar you could ever find. great sound. just be prepared- the small e string tends to break alot
