Can be both. The DHCP server, client and relay agent are provided both as reference implementations of the protocol and as working, fully-featured sample implementations. Both the client and the server provide functionality that, while not strictly required by the protocol, is very useful in practice. The DHCP server also makes allowances for non-compliant clients which one might still like to support.

the DHCP server is a part of windows 2003 server operating system ,it is a program, which assigns ip address from a pool of address to the systems of the network. A company can configure a lone machine as a DHCP server or it can be a part of a main server .

DHCP is just a part of the main server. We have to configure this software on the server. and DHCP is not at all a physical machine. This DHCP is used to assign ip address automatically as per the user request. all this entire process is done under system software only no other hardware is request.

A DHCP server can be both, but is mostly part of a router/modem in home use, and will be a part of the main server in bigger uses. I have heard of a physical machine in use as a DHCP server for BIG companies, but it is for very, very big companies, and as the DHCP server is only used once in a while, it is generally not taking up much CPU usage or bandwidth.

no... DHCP server is a "service".
- physical machine is "just a machine"
- physical machine needs an Operating System(OS) to be installed (windows, linux, BSD, Solaris, etc..)
- An OS will have many services
- For example Win XP will have services such as: DNS Client, DHCP Client (start-run-services.msc)
- On the other hand Win 2003 server will have services such as (DNS Client, DNS Server, DHCP Client, DHCP Server). Yes typically a 'server' will have both client and server services

Yes.

A DHCP server is a physical machine that runs the DHCP service. In a hugh network, it may be one computer dedicated to nothing but the DHCP service and is usually refered to as a DNS server. It a smaller network, with a single server, the DHCP service will run on that computer along with other services. So it can be either depending on the size and configuration of the network.
