Like others have said, it is just that you are used to the old designs. So when BMW changes design directions, especially this drastic, you are shocked into what you see. I was no different. They are starting to wear on me. I have likd the 5er from the beginning though and thought the 3er was "decent." Of course, this is coming from a guy who likes the e30 the best and the e36 over the e46.
The new 3er coupe is stunningly sharp. The new X3 sport redesign is awesome and the new X5 is going to be sweet.
I find that the biggest flaw in the new Bangle designs are not the exteriors, but with the interiors. Can we get any more boring on the inside? What happened to the driver-orientated layout? I purposely bought an e46 coupe over the new e90 sedan sole BECAUSE of the interior difference. That flat, horizonatal, Buick-like, interior, no matter how ergonomic, has to flat-out go.

It is all a metter of personal taste. Although the designs of the bmw have been slated, to some it is asthetically pleasing. The design idea has emphasis on the armour like body and the style is bmw's way of trying to be different. it is arguable that the m5 looks a mean piece of kit, aggressive styling is very dominant and a plus. the 6 series looks good whereas the new 3 series coupe looks very mature and sofisticated. I do agree less sporty options of certain models make it ugly but the top end models do look good, even the 3 series with the larger wheels

BMW are a head off their time and it's world market including China which could out sell the rest of the world put together. In addition if look you at the history of all BMW models they always hold something back saving face lifts and extras for later in the vehicles life to maintain sales when others start slow . If you buy the last of any model BMW produce you have the best looking and best speced car

BMW has a policy that everyone on the board, including the board of design has to retire at 50. You started seeing the new 3's (post E36) when Bangles was introduced. My best answer is that the new BMW box is gonna be here until Bangles is 50.

I don't like the new 3 series saloon either and no amount of time is going to change that. I also don't like the new 5 series, 7 series and 6 series. I think that in trying to be different they have just got it all wrong. The only one I really like is the new 3 series coupe. It looks infinately better than the saloon and is the first BMW since the last 5 series that I really desire.

Yeah they are different but not in a good way, a constant criticism of modern cars is they all look alike and I think part of the reasoning was that you can at least tell it's a BMW, but then you can with a Lada too.

BMW are trying to do what Jaguar did in the 80's with the xj6. When if first came out if was ten years ahead of taste. but now, the older xj6's are gorgeous looking cars (even if not reliable)
You are right BMW's are ugly cars...at the moment. Soon though they will see that classic design is always the innovation.
Bring back the M3!

i totaly agree ith you. e46 3 series is far superior to the current generation. the current sedan is the ugliest bmw out right now. i love the e46 m3, coupe, and the convertible. the other day i saw the new 3 series coupe and i was so pissed of with bmw for turning such an elegant car into a plastic piece of crap. i hate the designes made by their new japanese designer. bmw has always beeen known for their sutle, elegant and minimalist designs. not the case anymore. i don't even want to know what the new m3 is going to look like.

Don't you think that is the beauty of BMW? When you first see them, you think 'what the hell have they done', then a few weeks later, you see another one, and think 'they are not that bad'.... than after 6 months when you are used to seeing them, you think 'well done BMW, you've made a classic'.
I love BMW's and since the early 80's I have thought the same!!
