the device is quite primitive, not like the more modern ones, the head scale reading, it has no marked readings, as in just lines and nothing to indicate if it is centimeters or millimeters, how do i read that scale?

The head scale or the main-scale of a screw gauge has a bigger division in centimeters and they are divided into millimeters...
...
just get the main scale reading,
e.g. it is between fourth and fifth mark after 1cm.
that means 1.4cm
Now Chek which marking on the circular scale coincides let say 87th one does..
So, the final measurement is ,
1.487cm.

You need an item with a known dimension and calibrate your "primitive" device.
First measure the known item with your device.
Look how many "tall" and "short" lines you read.
So for example, if you know the test item is 14mm thick, and you have 1 tall and 4 short lines, then you know that your device is calibrated in centimetre.
Then you can use it to measure anything...,..
