In fact Biggs could have been charged with Escape From Legal Custody, which carries a maximum life sentence. However, there was no need to charge or sentence him upon his return as legally he was still under sentence of the court and had been since he was banged up in 1963.

This is a man who laughed at the British justice system for forty years. He spent his time and made a living telling the world that the British police, Crown Prosecution Service and Courts were idiots who could not catch a cold. He committed a crime during which an innocent man was viciously beaten (and I don't care if he personally weilded the cosh or not - read about the doctrine of joint venture before you comment) and millions of pounds stolen. His co-offenders all did their time and were released after serving appropriate sentences, considering the violent crime they had committed. Biggs sat in a flat in Rio, pissed to the eyeballs, and laughed at them, too.

So, what happens when his health deteriorates, and he realises that the Brazilian authorities didn't give a rat's scrotum about him, and never had? When the thought of him placing his life in the hands of the expensive, inefficient, uncaring Brazilian medical system starts to become an uncomfotable reality? Old Biggsy suddenly becomes a prahd Cocknee barra boy again, wiv a photo of 'Er Majesty (Gawd Bless 'Er! Schnif!) next to his 'art. And, uh, yes, well .... about that free treatment on the N.H.S. ....

Don't dignify the process by which he returned to this country. He was not extradited. He returned voluntarily with his tail between his legs, his fares paid for by the gutter tabloid press.

F*cking hypocrite. He's in Bellmarsh where he belongs and the only way he should get out is feet first in a pine box. The fact the some senile old f*ckwit in a daft wig doesn't have the stones to sentence a child rapist to an appropriate sentence doesn't mean that everyone should be treated lightly.

The awol you refer to amounts to 36 years.
He was sentenced to 30 years and has only served 7.
He could,if the govt wished to be nasty, be charged because of the escape. But somehow I don't think they'll bother.
Leave him to rot

I notice that the poor bastard of an engine driver who died directly as a result of this animals' actions hasn't even had a mention!
SHAME ON YOU ALL.

*** My apologies to ANGUS*** - I was so incensed that I failed to read your answer properly at first. I thoroughly agree with you.

no, he'd been sentenced in 1963, they just returned him to custardy... poor bast ard. he is in very poor health.

the govt needs to stamp it authority, but by keeping him banged up in bellmarsh, well when he passes, he'l be
lauded, and raised in folklaw as a victim of state opression, and systemic revenge.

even shylock dint actually take his pound of flesh... but the govt want theirs
