You need to couple of things:
1. A modem in your computer. Preferably the modem should not be more than 4-5 years old, as before that modems did not had fax capabilities.
2. For software, you can use in-built fax software present in Win XP. To look for it, click start, select Printers & Faxes. Here if you see Fax logo, then it means the software is installed. If you do not, then click on "Setting up Fax" on the same screen, and when prompted insert your Win-XP CD, the software will be installed..
3. Just plug in telephone line in your modem.
Now your are ready.
Let see you have prepared a word document, and you wish to fax it. Click on Print, then from the drop-down menu select Fax, and it will ask you for recipient's name and fax number, and there goes your fax. Same procedure you can adopt to send any other file / document.

If you have a modem and it was purchased within the last decade then it will have fax capability.

Otherwise, you should be able to find an e-mail to fax service.

You can sign up with UReach www.ureach.com

The have faxing and other telecommucations services. Bascially you can scan in your docs, upload and send to UReach with a cover sheet you fill out and it's a done deal. This service also allows you to receive faxes.

Another option is email attachments.

Hope this helps
