this seems like a bunch of work but its easier in the long run. do a wire check, first turn key/switch on and with a test light check for power to the coil. if this is dim either points are open or something is grounding out. bump engine over and check again. if the same results. pull wire off and check it. if not brighter the problem is in the wire, switch, or resistor block(if converted to 12v)white ceramic block with 2 wires in it. check both sides of this. if everything checks good here. pull the distributor off the front of the engine. check your points, file /replace if necessary. set the gap at .018" with it on a lobe(points open) and rotate to check to see if they close flat and even. if not, file flat and reset gap. check coil for cracks or spots that spark has been jumping, usually white spots. replace if noticeable. check for any thing in the unit grounding out. install the coil. reinstall the distributor. caution this only goes one way. if it does not drop right in do not try to force it in with the bolts, this will break an ear off the distributor. rotate 180 and try again. one bar is thicker than the other. hope this helps just did one last week.
