Well, I've had a lot of experience with anti-virus applications. To be frank, each has a downfall.

Here's the breakdown.

Panda Antivirus 2007
Panda AV 07 is very very good in my opinion. The loading time is a little long, and it does lag your computer if you have under 1.5Ghz processor and 512 mb RAM. It detects viruses that aren't even out yet with malicious asm pickups, this has a bad side because it can (and will) interfere with a lot of programs. For example, I tried running an OpenTibia server 24/7 with Panda running. Panda killed my auto-account creation php script because it was accessing and editing files! This is it's biggest downfall!

General Operation - 3/5
Virus pick-up - 4.5/5
Lag - Variable - Giving it a 2/5
Startup speed - 2.5/5
Overall - 3/5

NOD32
NOD32 has got to be the best anti-virus solution I have seen. It's start-up time is under a second, and it has NO lag associated with it on older systems (below 800Mhz and 128mb RAM). It's a great solution to old systems, and picks up ALL the new viruses. I have had no problems with NOD stopping my important processes and will thusly mark it.

General Operation - 5/5
Virus pick-up - 4.5/5
Lag - 5/5 (this is a good mark)
Startup Speed - 5/5
Overall - 5/5

TREND MICRO PC-CILLIN 2007
PC-Cillin is a well overlooked AV program and needs to be more publicized. It's got brilliant virus recognition and works like a breeze. It takes around 5-7 seconds to start and provides only slight lag during normal PC activities. PC-Cillin had no interference with my normal day-to-day activities.

General Operation - 4/5
Virus Pick-up - 5/5
Lag - 3.5/5
Startup Speed - 4/5
Overall - 3.5/5

ETRUST EZ ANTIVIRUS
EZ AV is a good solution to the normal virus problems, and picks up all viruses to a satisfactory standard. It is relatively more expensive then the rest, but does it's job quite well. It does interfere slightly with normal processes, closing down my otserv when it peeked over 80% CPU.

General Operation - 3/5
Virus Pick-up - 3/5
Lag - 3/5
Startup speed - 3/5
Overall - 3/5

Symantec Norton Antivirus
Norton is becoming slightly outdated as time goes on, and is now an untrustworthy program. Using this program and running executables loaded with viruses showed up a 40% pickup rating where others showed over 95% pickup rating. Norton now produces less upgrades then it used to, and is not able to keep up with the latest viruses. Norton lags the hell out of any computer under 2Ghz and 512 mb RAM and usually takes 25+ seconds to fully load.

General Operation - 2/5
Virus Pickup - 1/5
Lag - 1/5
Startup speed - 2/5
Overall - 1/5

Download and run AVG virus scanner from http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg71free_405a782.exe for free

You will also want an anti-spyware program. Run both Ad-aware Peronal Edition ( http://www.lavasoftusa.com ) and Skybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) to remove any spyware. Run both as one may caught something the other missing. (Unlike the virus scanner, which runs all the time, you have to manually run these anti-spyware programs) Then go to microsoft.com and download Defender to protect against future infections. It will run all the time and block future spyware. All three are free

Avast and AVG are those i prefer to propose. in basic terms google "unfastened avast" or "unfastened avg". They now the two incorporate Anti-spyware with their anti-virus application. I definitely have tried the two and that they paintings extremely properly. you will not receive technical help for the unfastened products. in case you prefer technical help, i could propose buying anti-virus application.
