because god took six days to make the world. and on the last day (sunday), he took a rest. :) which is why we go to church on sunday.
scientists figured that seven days is the most scientific way to base the years.

The word month is derived from "moon" and is the approximate time for the moon to orbit the earth and show all its phases, visible even to ancient man. A seven day week approximately divides a month into four even parts (7 x 4 = 28). As you indicate, the year is based on the time it takes the earth to orbit the sun (approximately 365 days adjusted by Leap Year). The day of course is the time for the earth to make one rotation which affected people most due to light and darkness. The month helped track the seasons for planting and reaping crops. The year was the period that brought a full cycle of seasons and restored the stars to their original locations once a year.

It's due to religious purposes. People lived their lives in the same way that the Christian religion stated that God made the world. Six days of hard toil and a day of rest.

I'm not sure if other religions had the same 6/1 day system, but it is this that has been adopted across the world, possibly due to western dominance and missionary work.

But, yeah, in short - it is due to religion.

six days would be too short, and 8 or 9 far too long.
