Everyone is trying to be clever saying their taps turn in two dirctions. Obviously, haven't read the question which asks why they turn ON in one direction. In fact they don't, some of the Water Boards' 'taps', (stop and gate valves), turn in the opposite direction. But it is just a convention that is accepted for domestic premises so that blind peolple know which way to turn the tap. This is also the reason hot taps should always be fitted on the left.

Mine twist in two directions: one way to turn them on, and the other way to turn them off. At the risk of boring you to death, some single taps turn one direction for hot water, and the other direction for cold water.
I suspect that I am boring you to death because certainly my own boredom threshold has been breached. At least I gained a few points out of it. And that.

Mine all turn in two direction - one way for ON, the other for OFF. What would you want a third direction for? - OR are you seeking a tap with a centre off position? Clever stuff that.........

You bunch of idiots, try reading the question, before you diss someone, and the answer is.....it can be in either direction, that isn't what matters, it's the screw action that turns on the water, as you unwind the screw it allows water to pass. ignore the others, small minded people.

Taps are no different to anything else that uses a screw, clockwise to tighten and vice-versa, So to turn off you rotate clockwise.
Left -hand threads are only used where nothing else will do., and that applies to everything.
