I wonder why you ask? The Philippines is not on record as a 3rd world country, but it is a very poor one. They have expensive resorts and strict laws of foreigners acquiring property and officials known to be corrupt. If you need some proof, then think of this. The Philippines has over 2,000 inhabited islands and most people live along the coastal areas, and very over populated, Manila alone has over 11 million people. The economy though growing with the aide of foreign companies coming in is still a weak one with very low wages and inadequate housing and very difficult for people to immigrate to other nations. For every job opening there are 100 people hoping to get it, depending of course. Fast food restaurants use contracts to employ workers with pay so small it is ridiculous and when 6 months are up, you must leave so another one to replace you can have their 6 months, if that isn't poverty, then what is?Approximately 50 pesos equal 1 dollar so that shows a weak economy. The entire country is approximately the size of Arizona.

There is poverty in the Philippines, but not as bad as one would think. And things are looking brighter, according to the 2006 UNDP Annual Report:

"Many countries in Asia, including the Philippines, have made steady progress in reducing poverty rates. But growth in urban poverty threatens to reverse some of these achievements."

This image, generated from the World Resources Institute database actually makes it easier to see just how 'poor' the Philippines is compared to other countries:

The Philippines IS suffering from poverty. But you wouldn't notice it with the millions of people in the shopping malls (but they don't actually buy, they just do some window shopping), almost everyone has cellphones (even the people on the sidewalk) and even when there is a disaster everyone is smiling at the cameras (we're rich in spirit).

Philippines is synonymous to poverty. Proving that it's not poor is like trying to move a mountain. Impossible!
