firstly it amazes me how many people have tried to answer this question with absoloutly no knowlage on asd what so ever! this arrogence is the reason tht i really want to educate people in asd because life for people with it and there familys is made so much more difficult by people who make assumptions like these! anyway i assume that you want to know this because you have autism in your life some how and you need to be able to explain it to people when they ask! i would say that autism effects the way that people see the world and that they find relationships with people abstract, they do not have the ability to imagine as we do and that without this things will be taken litterally it can also effect the way that there sences work it is so difficult to explain it simply but the national autistic society in the uk produces great business card size card that state quite simply Autism is a developmental disability that affects social and communication skills.
People with autism may behave in unpredictable ways as a result of their difficulty in understanding language and social situations.
Please help by being understanding and showing tolerance
these are designed to help people with asd explain there situation to others who are un awear. i hope this has helped

Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Both children and adults with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. Autism is a spectrum disorder and it affects each individual differently and at varying degrees - this is why early diagnosis is so crucial. By learning the signs, a child can begin benefiting from one of the many specialized intervention programs.

I think autistic people seem a little distracted, they often think things in pictures so it might take a little time for them to make a connection with a person, even if they 'know' that person. Sometimes, they can be obsessive about their interests, it might be numbers or statistics, some other sort of general knowledge, or it might be that they are very keen (obsessive) collectors. Autistic people don't always have the same level of symptoms, some may be able to function quite well in society, whilst others may never be able to communicate in any way that most of us could understand.... How did I do??

It is always dicey to generalize.
Non-autistic people have a brain function which limits the amount of stimulus allowed into the brain. Autistics, it is theorized, do not limit this stimulus as much or at all, and there brain receives a lot more stimulation, so that their sensory experience is very different from the average person, and they deal with the world in a different way, as pattern recognition is different.

it's where the brain did'nt develop a certain part completely, but most don't develop the "problems" because their autistic, but because they learn the Frustration bit from their parents. If you can treat your autistic children as normal and give them real love then they will be happy austic kids. its been known that some autistic kids have grown out of autism because they wanted to, and fought against it until they won. remember the brain does'nt start to develop until after your born. it's formed in the womb but does'nt start to develop til after birth.
