Men get more groth hormone at the rigth time. Women are done growing by the age of 15 (very average, very approximate). Men keep growing till they are 20 (again, very approximate). Apparently, it worked best that way with evolution. Note that the tendency for males to be taller than females is not only for humans. It is for many mammals.

It seems like taller men are always preferred by women. These men were more likely to father children, and this keeps happening for a long time, so those genes are preferred and keep propagating. Height and size of a woman seems to be more of a matter of fasion and social circle. Now it's fasionable to be tall and skinny. 100 years ago it was fasionable to be petite. 200 years ago it was fasionable to be plump.

It's not just humans that the male species are taller than the female species. But its because of the evolution of males being the protector so that they have the y chromosome which helps determine height. You should note that in a short family the males are also short even if their a little bigger than the females members. And in a tall family the males are very tall but so are the females (usually, but not always). This also applys to the animal kingdom. Actually your question is a generalisation really because it's not true that "men are taller than women" only some. plus men have to carry around some extra baggage lol

Because men evolved that way, as hunters back in the day the men with the genes making them taller and naturally stronger became more dominant. And I suppose this didn't to happen to women. Women have caught up a fair bit now days though, but the male average is still taller.
Plus a lot of women find it hot, my girlfriend doesn't seem to mind.

Why Are Men Taller

According to an article:

Tall men 'top husband stakes' (14 Aug 2002)

British scientists have come up with an explanation for why most men are taller than women.

They say taller men are more sexually attractive and are more likely to father children.

Men, though, prefer shorter women, so the two sexes are unlikely ever to end up the same height over the course of evolution.

"It seems that tall men and petite women are favoured in evolutionary terms, even in a modern population, so the height difference between men and women is unlikely to disappear," says Daniel Nettle of the Open University.

The verdict that size matters is based on a study of 10,000 people born in the UK in a single week in March 1958.

Their health and social development has been followed for the National Child Development Study.

Dr Nettle's team analysed data from the study in the year 2000 when the men and women were aged 42.

He found the taller the men were, the less likely they were to be single or childless.

A man of 1.83m (6'0") was more likely to have children than an average man of 1.77m (5'10").

Women, though, were most likely to be married and have children if they were below the average height of 1.62 m (5'3").

It is all down to two genes, one gene is the Y chromosome is the male sex chromosome, absent in women. The gene on chromosome 15, called CYP19, codes for aromatase - an enzyme that converts testosterone into oestrogen in both sexes. Oestrogen influences height because it is responsible for bones fusing over at the ends, which stops people growing.

It is all changing slightly now as women are beginning to grow quicker and taller.

Humans are a sexually dimorphic species. In the same way that a rooster is red and a chicken is brown and a dominant male gorilla has a silver furred back, human males are taller than human females.

Height is determined by genetic and environmental factors. And some of the genes determining height, like the aromatase gene, are located on the Y chromosome, which is available only in the males. Therefore, the increased height.

Men are taller than women because men are specialized to perform defense and hunting for their tribe. It is part of men being stronger in general.

This pattern is common (but not universal) among other mammals, as well. For instance, male deer are bigger and have antlers. Male elephants are bigger and have bigger tusks. Etc.
