Yes rabbits can smell. It is actually their urine that causes the order and not their "poop" You can reduce the smell by frequently cleaning the litter box. Additionally you can put a few drops of vanilla in their drinking water.

As far as the balcony is concerned, yes, you can put the bunny on the balcony in 40 degree weather. Two important considerations, one, make sure the bunny has a draft free area it can find shelter in. Second make sure the bunny stays dry in the cage.

Remember bunnies have very thick fur coats that they wear all of the time. They actually will do better in the cold than in the summer heat. How hot does it get on the balcony during the summer?

I have 2 bunny's and I keep mine inside and mine don't stink its called being a responsible pet owner and cleaning there cage daily or at the least every other day. Mine has a pan underneath that I put clumping litter in (they cant get to the litter) and I scoop it out. There is no odor and is easy clean up for the winter. Yes there urine stinks especially my buck but the litter is a life savor but if you litter box training NEVER use clay litter it can kill your bunny I only use it cause its in a pan under there cage and come in no contact with it at all seriously my cats smell worse then my bunny's do =:3

Unspayed and neutered rabbits can be stinky. If you litter box train them you should be ok. Fill the box with wood stove pellets. They are great at obsorbing odor. Don't let your rabbit live outside. Would you want to live outside? Domestic rabbits are different from wild ones and don't thrive well in varying temps. You should read the House Rabbit Handbook and go to these websites.

Yes they do. I had two and I place them in my patio. Still, it smelled terribly. They are also very "mischivieous" and love to get out of their cages. Go to National Wildlife Habitat and see if it can help out.
My advice, if you do not have a yard, do not have bunnies.
