This is the headline in today's paper. It refers to flogging a rapist who was convicted of attacking an 83 year old woman. It is on top of his sentence of 16 years. The judge says people who have been flogged, never re-offend. Human rights groups are outraged. I think it is a good idea and wish it was here. What do you think?

It was in the Bahamas.

I'd like to believe that judge was right! What "human rights" does a convicted rapist have, other than the prohibition about "cruel and unusual" punishment. Given the nature of the crime, what's so cruel and unusual about flogging? I mean sure, the guy feels some pain, but it heals up. That poor old lady will probably have nightmares and be too frightened to step out of her house for the rest of her life. I'm surprised the attack didn't kill her. She must be a marvelously tough old thing!

It may seem very harsh from our point of view but think of the poor woman who was attacked, I say good on them for flogging him. If it meant he never re-offends (unlike here where a lot do) then I'm all for it.

Couldn't agree with you more.

There is no deterrent for any crime these days and until the punishments are made to suit the crime then today's criminals will continue to break the law, and have the law abiding citizens living in fear.

The "do gooder's" who are always looking after the criminals and allow this situation to escalate should be named and shamed, as they are a disgrace to the human race.

to be honest I think all punishment these days is too soft for the crimes committed.

A good deterrant to prevent them re-offending should be foremost when giving out any punishment..so yes I think he should have been flogged...or the alternative is to chop his UNOWOT off.
