I cant tell you about steam cleaners in your country. However In a former life I owned a carpet cleaning company (seems like another life, its been so long ago) I would suggest that when you have your nice cream carpet cleaned (yuk, why cream in a high traffic area?) have them put scotch guard protectant or its equivalent on your stairs. This will keep your carpet from getting soiled so quickly. It also keeps old stains from showing up again (like pop spills that leave a sugar residue and attract dirt)
As far as a steam cleaner look for the following:
1. Water temp between 170-200 degrees farenheit. The cleaning effectiveness of your soap increases 100% for every 18 degrees of water temperature. so 168 degree water cleans 100% better than 150 degree water.
2. CFM rating. Cubic Feet per Minute of airflow. It might be rated in the metric system there. The Higher the better suction and the better cleaning.
3. The pressure of the spray jet.
I found that a commercial steam cleaner is not a whole lot more expensive than a home model and they work far better. And a janitorial supply store will probably have used commercial units for the same price as a home model, with much better results.
And the next time you choose carpet, think brown. HEHEHEHE

Any steam cleaner that works with hot water or cold is the best.
It's really not the cleaner that does the trick, it's the pretreat and the chemicals you use on it.
So, here is the best things to look for...
Heat/Cold water
18 amps and up
Rotating Brushes that turn on and off
Ability to clean easily
Has an upholstery attachment - this tool works great on cars also
Don't leave any water or solution in it if your area gets below freezing - it will break the tubing.
Remember the more money you spend the longer it will last and usually is better quality. For every $100 you spend on a vacumn you get a year. For every $100 you spend on a steam cleaner you get 2 years.
When I had my son I purchased my first steam cleaner and have never been without it since and he's 18.
It is much cheaper and you have control over when to clean and how much to clean it.

I know people with carpet cleaners. They all set in the closet and are never used except maybe on holidays. I would suggest you and your boyfriend really think about it and ask if you will really use it and s it worth the money. You could probably take the money you would use to buy it and just replace the carpet on the stairs. No matter how hard you try or even a professional, you may get it cleans but you will still have clean stains. You might look in to some time of hardwood covering for the stairway.

If you are anything like me and the wife you are up and down the wooden hill like a yo yo. Cream, wrong choice. Vax just smears the dirt around, end up with a beige carpet. Clear plastic carpet roll as seen in most offices is a good temporary fix until the nuptial curiosities wear off. Or get it professionally cleaned.

The best rental I found is U Haul. I use that and the water is filthy, the grocery store ones are crap.
Make a paste, not too thick, with that OXY 10 stuff. Then shampoo. The stuff works great, I use that on my upstairs hall. The carpet doesn't look like I have 3 kids and 2 dogs.

Resolve carpet cleaner. spray on, scrub with brush, if you want you can put towels over newly cleaned stairs to absorb some moisture. Otherwise it will dry on its own. smells nice too. good luck

you're better off hiring a carpet cleaner. Homebase, some tesco store hire them out at reasonable rates.
