I sometimes have the same problem and answer loads of iPod questions on here when I can help.
Pause it and leave it it will turn itself off.
or
Press and hold the centre button and the play button at the same time until the iPod resets itself,
The second one works every time for me and should take about 20 to 30 seconds to reset when holding the buttons.
If you have any other iPod probs feel free to ask me if I can help I will. Good luck.

Press and hold the play/pause button in 5 seconds and it should be off now. Or reset your iPod by connecting it to your computer, set the HOLD swith to HOLD, and turn it off again and press and hold the Center and Menu button for 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Now, if it's not yet off, send your iPod in your iTunes to gain some "technical powers", disconnect it and it may turn off now. Still not working? Go to the nearest Apple Center or the store where you bought your iPod.

press the center button and the menu button together until the apple logo appears. This resets the ipod but not the music library.

you need to download/scan/install/run the free ipod updater from apple.com... it will update it with a load of 'bug fixes' which should get yours running as it should. x
