these days every part of the kit has its own seperate mike. they probably only used one mike for the whole kit in the 60,s

I'm not sure that's true - listen to Ringo on songs like Paperback Writer, Tomorrow Never Knows and If I Needed Someone. Very short rolls, but really solid sound. They probably had the best equipment at the time though.
Jimi Hendrix Experience recordings have fantastic drum sound too. And the Who.
What are you comparing it to?
