What's going on there? How did it get started?

It is ethnic conflict/war. Traditional people of Sri Lanka are the SINHALESE people and they are the majority people and almost holds the key positions. The second largest group of people in Sri Lanka are the TAMIL people and I believe they are of Indian origin (originally brought to Sri Lanka by the British planters during the colonial period to work in their plantations).

The problem there is that the Tamil people are asking for a separate autonomous territory so that they too can wield power ! For this they employ terror tactics by their major terror orgn: LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam), which is engaged by the Government forces....!
