No, and I'll give you an example.

I have a colleague who grew up as the poorest kid in a very rough neighbourhood. He was an only child. When he was a baby, his father left them and his mother was an alcoholic. The little boy (who is now my colleague) had one set of clothes for school and one set of clothes for playing. His mother only had very low paying jobs and spent most of her earnings on booze. They lived in a government funded housing project. The boy decided that if he wanted anything he was going to have to earn it. So he started a paper route and ended up buying another set of clothes and school supplies for himself (he was only about 10yrs old).

As he grew older he always worked and wanted more from life. He eventually got into a really good job (where he works now), he is married and they have a little girl. His wife works at a good job too and together they have a very comfortable lifestyle.

I know many people who have stories like this (including my mother) and have come to realise that poverty is a choice in many many cases. There are very few people in western society that are poor because the 'have to be'. Being successful and wealthy is also a choice, if you can work hard and have the determination to succeed, you can do whatever you wish.

You have a choice - don't let people tell you any different. Take every opportunity that crosses your path to work and / or educate yourself. You mustn't be lazy, and you must not expect anyone else to dig you out of your poverty. Only you can do it.

Good Luck!

Sorry genes has nothing to do with poverty. Genes define the character / personality / intelligence in humans and poverty on the other hand is sheer a situation. If poverty is genetic then lots of people who were poor born will not become rich. The best example is Bill Gates who is one among the richest persons in the world today but comparitivly he has come from a poor family only.

The government in new zealand seems to think so. Thats why they have special funding and grants only for people that are "maori" they also get more on the un-employment benefit & special perks than people of other races. why? because their maori and SOME of their land got un- lawfuly taken like a H U N D R E D years ago... well, they stole the land of the morioris who they killed and ate till they were extinct! yes thats right they killed a whole race of poeple and a few species of birds.

I think all parents give their genes to their offspring.
Lyrics for song 'Children Will Listen'
What do you leave to your child when you’re dead
Only what ever you put in it’s head

I once know a 19yr in the 80's that would not put his money in the banks, because his father told him that if the US went to war. The banks would take it.

Some of the richest people can from the poorest grandparents.

I think it is a matter of will, desire and aspiration of a individual to want to do better for your childern.

It's learned, not genetic.

The reason children of poor parents are more likely to be poor themselves is because the parents are unable to show them that life can be better.

There are plenty of examples of poor people becoming rich, and vice versa.
