Or was it just a very large conventional blast or a failed nuclear test?

LOL.. yeah I heard of the seismic readings to which we as Americans, should now be comforted, cause Bush is on the it, lol..(don't need anyone running around in panic like Chicken Little, "THE SKY IS FALLING, THE SKY IS FALLING". In my opinion they tested it, like they said they would do. I'm just waiting til the afternoon to hear about the tsunamis and how someone was affected.. sheesh,, there goes the next 3 months of having to join the Peace Corps and American Red Cross, there goes all my expendable income. The media downplayed that incident to secure us, but found a corrulation between October 11, and September 11, and the small engine aircraft that crashed and caused so much high alert, and panic... way to go on that one!

Okay, so international trade is supposed to be boycotted next against China, yeah right!.. now the US economy is doomed.. lol.. I say all this in jest and I hope the asker reviews this in jest. I'm pretty intelligent and get a kick out of comments about this issue. Media leading the blind!

Although in circumstances such as surrounding the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK or North Korea) it is hard to fully determine whether or not it was actually a test of a nuclear device, there is some evidence pointing towards the fact that it was.

DPRK were found in 2003 to be attempting the development of nuclear weapons, and at this time were claiming they actually possessed them. Whether or not their claims were true, it does raise the possibility that the programme existed and the recent explosions were nuclear in nature.

See - http://www.fas.org/nuke/guide/dprk/nuke/index.html

Add to this, news articles in August provide evidence that nuclear tests were planned.

See - http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/08/17/northkorea.nukes/index.html

However, saying that, the actual explosive results of the recent detonated nuclear device show that it was either a relatively small device, or one that failed to detonate properly.

Without direct proof (involving use of said weapons or UN Inspection) it is hard to say for sure if the DPRK are in possession of nuclear weapons. Any acceptance or acknowledgement by their goverment should be taken as a possible form of bravado; seeking to elevate their status on the world stage and show that they are a 'force to be reckoned with'.

North Korea seems to want a nuclear war - but nobody - even the States wants anything to do with it. The best solution is active and forceful diplomacy, the worst scenerio would have to be an internal revolution or the forced removal of the nutcase whose running the country. Can somebody please call the Central Intelligence Agency?

Yes & No. The test was conducted and the results are still being analysed. It is a small well controlled blast purely for testing purposes.

No confirmation yet, then. Just a lot of media hype. If it was a conventional blast, it was a big 'un.

Who really cares? NK wont declair war against the US. Even if they did the seacond anything missile shaped leaves NK in the general direction of the US. The Americans will wipe it clean. China is a against NK doing that so they as sure as hell not going to help them in a war against their chief importer of Chinese goods.
Its just NK trying to be big and showing off. It wont amount to anything.
