We put up a bat house a year ago. There seems to be no sign of any bats stopping by. We installed it under the eave of a tall farm building, near a lake. You'd think the bats would love it there, with mosquitoes plentiful near the lake.. Any idea how to attract the bats. Location, Kentucky.

It is likely that bats in your area have great accommodations and there is no great demand for new homes. Nature has a way of striking a good balance, so don't be discouraged- your empty bat house may be a shining example of that balance. Bats feed primarily on flying insects. These nocturnal mammals move constantly at night wherever insects are abundant. If the food is there the bats will visit your area and feed, but move on to roost. Relax and enjoy the beautiful balance.

it easily takes a year or two for bats to find your bathouse, so just keep it cleared out for them. also, put the bathouse on the east side of a building, or a south side. it's important that they not overheat during the day.

one other possible consideration. is the inside of the bat house rough sawn? i have seen bathouses sold with smooth lumber and the bats won't roost there since they can't cling to it. the outside can be smooth and decorative, but the inside has to be rough, either rough sawn or with grooves set into the wood.

enjoy them!

You mentioned the house is mounted under an eave. That could be an answer. If it is always shaded, bats may not use it. The box should get 6-7 hours of daylight.

It can take two years or more to get bats to move into your bathouse. Be patient.
