Cut the bottoms of the stems at an angle under running water.

Hopefully the flowers came with a packet of Flora Life or something similar. I've also been told a crushed aspirin in the water works well.

Also make sure to replenish the water in the vase.

Here is a link to MUCH more detailed instructions:

First of all remove any leaves that will be in the water. Cut the stems with a sharp knife. Never use scissors they will damage the cells and water will not be able to be absorbed( bent neck syndrome will occur)Use cool water if you want the roses to stay closed as long as possible. Warm water is you prefer them to open. Hopefully it was a florist that you purchased your roses from, you will have a package of floral preservative to put in the water to prolong the life of your roses. Roses should last about 2 weeks when taken care of properly if bought fresh. Good luck and enjoy.( some variety will last longer ie. forever young)

What's worked for me, put a couple of pennies or an aspirin in the water. Not sure why this works but it does. Also cut the stems at an angle, scissors give a pretty clean cut.

They sell a powder at flower shops for that too.

Generally it's a moot point how long they last though. You've given her something that she can just enjoy the beauty of, without it being another thing she has to care for/another job to add to her list, which makes it truly a gift. Lucky woman! Smart man!

That was a very good price you got. First, you have to use the floral"food" that came with the flowers. Cut the stems, at an angle daily to keep the stems open to absorb the water. Change the water frequently. Keep out of direct sun and away from direct heat. When they droop, remove them, pull the petals apart and allow them to dry out. Some won't come through the drying process, but you'll be able to save some. Save the dried petals to make potpourri,

Refill fresh water everyday and eliminate some leaves. Put a coin under the water. Usually a bud to blossom take 3 week long.

Trim the ends at a slant and before putting in water, remove the lower leaves so no leaves will be sitting in the vase in the water. Use the chemical they give you for the water.
