Science is limited to philosophy that may be tested by direct or indirect observation. Both have methods of valid proofs. All science starts with philosophy, hypothesis, and by testing and observation may move to theory.
Philosophy has the advantage of gaining an understanding of the whole of all that exists, where science is limited to a very small part of the physical world. The tools of philosophy are much more difficult to master.

even though science is supposed to be empirical (subject to observation and experimentation) and philosophy more a school of thought, they sometimes overlap. There are university degrees given for "Philosophy of Science" these days. An example of science and philosophy together is Darwinian evolution which takes something that has not been empirically observed and comes up with philosophical beliefs to support it. That is different from microevolution which is pure empirical science.

science deals with the how. philosophy deals with the why. scientific questions can usually be answered or theorized upon with facts and prior knowledge. philosophical questions are answered on a subjective level; each person can form his own answer and not be wrong, because no answer is truly right.
