how about:
1. a nice photo frame with a picture of the two of you inside
2. chocolate
3. can you cook? maybe something to eat
4. a pretty teacup/ coffee cup set
5. does the friend have kids? some toy/ book for the child
6. if the friend is a workaholic, a day at the spa/ pampering kit
7. if the friend is a she and has a newborn baby, offer to babysit for one day and let her go to the movies or pamper herself in the bathroom
8. a nice CD?

eih something simple but cute like personalized things..or common things that you think your friend could use...in your friend's work or study or something mushy...
