The Moon shines by the light it receives from the sun. New Moon occurs when the Moon is directly in front of the sun. The side visible to us gets no light. New Moon occurs once a ( lunar) month.

A lunar eclipse takes place when the earth comes right between the sun and the Moon, so that the earth blocks sunlight from reaching the moon.

During new Moon , the lunar side facing the sun is lit. During a lunar eclipse, sunlight does not reach Moon at all.
