Pinch your nose. Drink coffee. Wash your face. Watch a scary film on your iPod for a while.

Try to get some exercise in before you go to work in the morning - even if it's just a brisk half hour walk. It gives you an energy boost that lasts the whole day.

Stay away from high GI foods - they are processed more quickly (digestion takes up lots of energy too), whereas low GI foods are processed more slowly and as a result don't make you feel sleepy - also make you feel full for longer.

Try to get up from your desk as often as you can, or move about a bit. My mid-morning stretching routine keeps me awake and all my colleagues (hard to fall asleep when you're laughing hysterically...).

Avoid long meetings.

For a quick lift, run round the block for some fresh air. But in general, avoid coffee after 6pm, go to bed early, sleep in a dark room with the window open a little bit. Exercise ( walk to work?). Eat a good breakfast. Have plenty to drink during the day (sips of water) and a banana or something mid-morning so blood sugar doesn't drop. Get out at lunchtime but don't overtire yourself. Do some stretches at your desk - arms, shoulders, rotate ankles, deep breaths. I find after lunch the killer - a ten-minute nap, if possible, feels like a night's sleep.

My husband has always managed to have a catnap during the day. He simply shuts the door at his lunchtime and has the amazing ability to fall asleep immediately. I am very envious of that. He swears by it - has a cup of coffee before so that the caffeine hits him a few minutes later and wakes him. Because he gets it out of the way he never feels sleepy.

8 hours is too much. It used to be the recommended amount but now anything between 4 and 7 is recommended depending on how much sleep a person needs.

In general, go to bed when you get tired instead of watching another film or going out etc.

Do not drink caffeine....although it 'stimulates' it does make you feel more tired until you get your next 'hit'.

Eat a healthy diet, by healthy I mean make sure you get enough vitamins of in you.

Get fit....if you are unfit, then there is a tendancy to feel lathargic. If you stay fit you will be more alert.

Give yourself time in the morning to wake up. If you need to leave the house for work at 8am, then get up at 6.30am and give time to yourself before starting your days work. Don't get up with just enough time to shower/wash and eat breakfast then dash out. Enjoy your breakfast then read the paper, sit out in the garden (weather and light permitting), whatever, just have time for yourself.

Before you anyone can answer you, they need to know if: do you sleep at least 8 hours every night. What time do you go to bed and when do you get up? If the reply is in positive then you need to go to a doctor, but if it is in the negative, change your sleeping routine. a simple solution is, have your meals at 3 hours before you go to bed. Do not take any liquids after 15h00 every day. This ensures that you do not get up to go to the bathroom. Make sure that your room is as dark as can be and as quiet as possible.

Power-nap - have a short nap at lunchtime, say 20 to 30 minutes and this should give you a boost for the rest of the day.

I find it helps to have a walk in the morning after I get up and before breakfast. It should be for at least half an hour

avoid tea and coffee after 5 pm, go early to bed, also try to start your day with some exercises e.g. walk the dog or go to the gym for half an hour.
