Throughout your life you will be told various answers to that question, and not many of them will be true.
A few good pieces of advice to start with would be to spend less than you earn, budget what you do earn very carefully, and always keep stepping back to look at the big picture in order to decide what you really need and what you can live without.
A big simple but important practical tip: if you use credit cards, make sure you pay off your balance in full every single month. So many people get into debt by not following this tip, and of course that is the opposite of what you want to do.
