American politics are designed for an endless number of parties, its the lack of people knowing who they are, I think.

we are all raised to think of only 2 parties, also, for a variety of reasons (plurality voting, for one), American politics are built for a two party system. in any case, most people do not even know about the LP.

Because people are lazy. Most people tend to vote straight ticket.

Fear of change because people are used to only two parties.
