According to a site giving details of an art exhibition by the artist, Dr. Seuss' real name was Theodore Seuss Geisel. He wasn't a real doctor. He just liked the sound of it.

He used the 'Dr ' as a kind of acknowledgement of his father's unfulfilled hopes that he would earn a doctorate when he went to study at Oxford - he decided to go off travelling instead!

He studied towards a Doctorate in Literature, but didn't get it. The Dr. comes from his dad wanting him to get his Doctorate.
