Bell palsy is paresis or paralysis, usually unilateral of the facial muscles, caused by dysfunction of the 7th cranial nerve (there are 12 cranial nerves). It is probably due to a viral infection, usually demyelinating in type. Herpes simplex – the virus responsible for cold sores – may lie dormant in the facial nerve, then cause inflammation when it reactivates. Other viral illnesses such as mumps and rubella may also trigger Bell’s palsy. Having diabetes seems to increase the risk, and the condition may also run in families. Treatment with steroids within the first 24 hours or so of the onset of the symptoms and antivirals such as Acyclovir are treatment options.

Excellent question!!

I've had Bells Palsy myself, and at the time, I was working for a Ship Repair Yard!! Yes, I'm female, and I was the first and only female part owner of an American Ship Repair Yard! I was the VP for Human Resources, and I too thought that when I went to work with the Yard employees - all 11 unions worth of them - I'd get MORE THAN MY USUAL NUMBER OF STARES!!!

What I decided to do is to just keep my head up, and pretend that nothing was wrong. Even now the right side of my face is about 35% numb, so that I have right eye droop and only the left side of my smile "performs"!!!

No one really knows why or how someone will get Bell's Palsy. Sometimes, like in my case, it is a symptom of something else - in my case, MS. In others, it is a one time event. You wake up with one side of your face numb, your eye drooping, your mouth feeling like you've had a shot of novacane, and after a period of time - different for each person - it goes away!! Sometimes all at once, like it came, sometimes gradually.

You can always email me by clicking on to my "name". AND, if you want to learn more about how to manage your symptoms - whatever they are - check out my website:

Finally, please make sure that you are under a doctor's care. If your symptoms progress, make sure that you are checked out for Multiple Sclerosis.

Good luck!!!!

I got identified with herpes virus (type 2) about four yrs ago, whilst I was still attending college and had a stupid one-night stand. I understand lots of girls say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a massive mistake that one time and suddenly it seemed like I was going to have to live with the implications for the rest of my life. The worst part was feeling I could never date men again. In the end, who wants to go out with someone who has sores round her private parts? But since a friend shared this movie https://tr.im/ot3zc everything changed.

Not only was I able to clear away all traces of the herpes virus from my system in less than 21 days, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so fortunate to write that just a week ago, in front of everybody in a busy restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me! This program provided the opportunity to be happy and experience real love again. Now I hope that I can help others too by sharing this story.

It's just something that affects some people, in the nerves in the face, but usually goes away.
