Side effects--having anal sex over a long period of time will stretch the two sphincter muscles in the anus and you could lose some control of your bowels. And it could cause hemorrhoids. Both conditions are not ones I would care to have!

I have never really gotten anything out of it, other than knowing my partner is enjoying it. There are no side effects if you are smart. Use lots of lubricant, such as KY or WET, or you can get ANAL EASE from an adult novelty store. Go slow and relax to keep from tearing, and never go from anal to vaginal sex, this does cause a nasty bacterial infection.
