Airlines are basically big shipping companies. Just like FedEX they ship by weight. So why all of a sudden is it wrong to want more money from someone that will use more gas and more space?

Looks like everyone is insulting you, and not answering the question. I had no idea there were that many obese people on yahoo answers. It comes down to, if you take up 2 seats, or the amount of gas is 2x normal to transport you, then you should pay double. The fact that this is already in effect, does not change the fact that it is debated. I would have to say most people who answered were mad at you for your other questions.

Because they are balanced out by thin people. If the airline companies want to avoid the outcry of dismicrination, find a price that is between the two extremes, skinny and heavy. The lower cost of skinny people will make up the difference of the heavier people and the customer will never be the wiser for it. I do something similar in my mail order company. I lose money on almost all my 1 lbs boxes, but my difference is made up on my 3 - 5 lbs boxes. So yes, it is reverse, but it is the same basic concept.

As much as the companies need to turn a profit, they also need to keep the customers happy, and this would go a long way to avoiding customer complaints over such matters.

My personal opinion on this is just the reverse, if I at 115 pounds can fly for a much lower rate than someone at 175 pounds, then why should I have to pay the same price? See how complicated ticket pricing could become in a hurry? So the issue, is not that they are "fat" it is, can they fit in one seat? If the answer to that question is no, and they need two seats, then they need to pay for the price of two seats instead of one. Too bad I only need half a seat! Wonder if I could find someone to sit in the other half and us split the ticket cost?

[I]t should be judged by how comfortable the person sitting next to them is. If a person is so large that it infringes on the next person's space, then yes, they should pay for 2 tickets and put a butt cheek on each seat. But if the next person is comfortable and still has their space, then no it isn't right to charge more. Tolerances vs. Intolerance of people around them. That is the question here.

So it really has to do with amount of space you occupy on board. It's arguable if airlines should build bigger seats like they accomodate for disables. It can be kind a tricky issue.

That's a reasonable proposition, but then again where do we go from there when it seizes to be about fat people? Midgets? Disabled? Ugly? Or as the 'allhellow' suggested smelly or talkactive?

No, I think they should "flag" you and just make you pay for the extra seat.

Then again..I'm with Megan, Heck, I wouldn't mind paying the extra if I didn't half to sit neck to someone like you either!!

when you only have one ***, do you want to pay for two?

come on, really. regardless of the person's size they are still just one person. If you have a wheelchair bound person on the plane are ya' gonna' make them pay extraordinary overprices to store their wheelchair? Somehow I think that's a little biased.

Just wait, one day you too will be supersized and having to pay that double price, answer your question then.

I'd pay more for an airline ticket not to have to sit next to an uneducated, rude, annoying, worthless person such as yourself.

Just a side note: The person who asked this question will email you if she doesn't like your answer. She e-mailed me because she didn't like mine! My opinion on that? DON'T ASK if you don't want to hear our answers.
